Scary Day

Monday, August 27th, 2012.  5weeks, 4days.

I’ve had some concerns in the past 24 hours – some slight cramping and discomfort, which I know can be perfectly normal, and then last night as I went to bed, the real issue started.

My heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest as soon as I laid down.  It kept up its pace throughout the night, and into the morning.  I called Dr. K’s office this morning to let them know, and they asked for me to come in to be checked out.

My blood pressure was alright, but my heart rate was something like 115bpm, which had Dr. K concerned.  He ordered an ultrasound, early though it is, to be sure I didn’t have some mild ovarian hyperstimulation.

The ultrasound showed no fluid around my uterus or ovaries, and no cysts or evidence of an ectopic pregnancy.  It’s a few days too early to see much, but the doctor thought he could see just a blip of something that looked like a gestational sac right up at the top of my uterus.  Right where it should be, he said.

I was also sent for a boatload of blood work to ensure that I wasn’t showing signs of an infection or overactive thyroid, and those all came back fine.  They think maybe I’m just dehydrated, but I’m to call back tomorrow to report on how I feel and my heart rate numbers so they can be sure nothing is wrong.

Oh, and while the lovely lab ladies were taking gallons of blood, they also did a third beta, just to check things out:  920.

Twelve days ago it was 17.  Ten days ago it was 39:  Doubling time just over 40 hours.

Today it was 920, which slows my doubling time to just over 52 hours.

Now I know that most doctors like to see doubling times between 48 and 72 hours, but the nurse practitioner who called me with the results sounded like that wasn’t great.  I guess their office is pretty strict on the 48 hours thing…

And so, I am going back to repeat the beta again on Wednesday.

I’m now feeling even less reassured than I was before, and on top of that, all heart-poundy and light-headed too.

Gah.

Only nine more days till the ultrasound that (God willing) shows me the heartbeat that will finally let me breathe.

Nine more days.

I can do this.

As you progress in the pregnancy the doubling times slow down. Try to relax maybe get a massage and drink plenty of fluids. If you are dehydrated your blood pressure would be lower so, drink drink drink till your peeing every 5 min’s! 🙂

Try not to worry (I know, I know, easier said than done). Doubling time of 52 hours still seems not that far off. Hopefully when you go on Wednesday you will be reassured with an awesome beta and today was a fluke. Thinking of you. Xoxo

I really think that 52 hours is fine for a doubling time. I just need to keep telling myself that I’ve been getting by with just below average my whole life… why should now be any different? 😉

Oh, I know how stressful this can be. I won’t pretend to know what you are feeling, only that I was very stressed when I had complications. Follow their advice, try to breathe and relax (i know…not easy). Hoping your next beta turns out awesome!

I really am trying to just let go of the anxiety and focus on the good things… hopefully they will keep coming. 🙂

I thought it was good too, until that damn NP opened her mouth!

Oh well, I must just be carrying a B student and not a straight-A student. Either way works for me. 😉

You’d think so, but nothing’s ever quite good enough for the docs. 😉

I hate nurse practitioners (though some probably know what they’re talking about..) they do that shit all the time to make us worry, worry, worry!! Ugh. I’m thinking about you constantly and I hope you are taking it easy, put some lemon juice in your water (it makes it more alkalinic) and drink up. The good news is that your BP is good and the US didn’t show an ectopic pregnancy or pose any concern to your doc. So chin up babe, it will all be OK! Screw those worries and give them to God to deal with. Xoxo

Thanks, friend! I’m finding it takes more work to keep my mind off the negatives these days, but I know now how important it is to put in the effort! Eyes on the prize! 😉

Yikes to your scary day but I am still very hopeful that everything will be just fine. I agree with what others have said about your betas still looking fantastic. I’m no doc, but they sound good to me!

I have been getting feelings of high BP or an increased HR too, or sometimes it just feels like my heart is about to pop out of my chest and I can hear it in my ears. It definitely gets worse when I’m stressed, and I’ve kind of contributed to the increased blood volume associated with pregnancy. Stuff like that happened to me a lot during he first 2 weeks, then slowly faded. Now it’s creeping back and I’m pretty sure it’s normal.

I am so excited that your u/s looked promising! I know it was too early to see a sac but how thrilling to know that it’s in the right place! The next 9 days will zip by faster than you think :_

I honestly think the anxiety combined with the increased blood volume probably had a lot more to do with this than dehydration. It was a combined effort, but it took me down HARD!

It was pretty nice to hear the doc say that there were no signs of an ectopic pregnancy, so that was definitely a good thing. I have lots of things planned to keep me busy until the 5th, so I’m hoping to stay good and distracted! 🙂

I spent most of July googling beta info, and once into five + weeks, the beta slows. I will be rooting for great growth for you!

Woo! That’s great to hear! I hope that’s all that’s going on here, too. As long as that number is still going up tomorrow, I will have hope.
